Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is committed to maintaining the safety of our students and their families as well as our teachers, support staff and the entire community. Wearing face coverings, washing hands and maintaining social distance are key components of staying healthy in the age of COVID-19, as is tracking community spread. To that end, we are providing this regularly-updated report with the number and location of confirmed COVID-19 cases within our school and administrative buildings, arranged by date when reported to the school division. Out of respect for the privacy of our staff and students, cases will refer to “individuals” only. Anyone considered to be a close contact of an affected individual will be contacted by the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health or VBCPS health services directly. All others will receive a notification letter from VBCPS.

Cases reported since school started on Sept. 8, 2020

This dashboard will be updated daily by 4:30 p.m. and will reflect the most current data available based on contact tracing from the previous 24 hours.

When a COVID-19 case has been reported to the school division and confirmed:

• A contact tracing investigation will be completed in collaboration between the school division’s Health Services Office, school administrator, the Transportation Office (if applicable), and the VBDPH investigation team.
• Those individuals identified by the VBDPH as COVID-19 close exposure contacts will be called by the investigating nurse and required to quarantine for 14 days from the last date of exposure.
  • Per the CDC, a close contact is defined as someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes during an interaction starting from two days before illness onset or, for asymptomatic individuals, two days before their testing date.
  • Prior to returning to work or school, any employee or student who is diagnosed or tests positive for COVID-19 must complete the CDC isolation guidance, be well, and provide a medical clearance from a healthcare provider to return to work or school.
  • Accommodations for continued learning will be addressed through the student’s school principal and teacher(s).
  • Please note that cases are not reported on the day an individual became ill, but on the day that person has been classified as meeting the case definition for COVID-19.
• All other individuals (e.g., visitors, staff or parents/guardians of students) on a bus or in the school (or other VBCPS building) who are identified as low-risk exposure contacts will receive a general notification letter from VBCPS via the AlertNow notification system.
• Please contact your child’s school to check or update your contact information in AlertNow.
• The VBDPH will recommend what additional cleaning is needed on a bus or at the school based on the last date an individual with COVID-19 was on a bus or in that building.
