Half-day Kindergarten

Students enrolled in schools with half-day kindergarten classes attend morning or afternoon sessions. The following three VBCPS elementary schools will provide half-day kindergarten for students during school year 2019-20:

  • Dey
  • Hermitage
  • Thoroughgood

Every student enrolled in a half-day kindergarten class is screened either before the start of the school year or during the first two weeks of school to determine if the student would benefit from additional instructional time and support in the areas of reading, writing and math. If students are found eligible, they will be enrolled in Extended Day Kindergarten (EDK) classes, which are limited to 15 students, a smaller class size than the school division's average kindergarten class. EDK classes begin no later than September 30, and parents will be notified by the school if their child has been selected.
